Paleo diet

I’ve heard a lot of people talking about the Paleo diet and how good they feel after being on it for a while.  I never really knew exactly what it was, assuming it was about eating unprocessed foods like the cave people did.  But when I looked it up I realized it’s similar to the clean eating diet, except no dairy, no grains…Hey, I know I’d be better off  eating foods that are as close to their natural state as possible, giving up sugar, and of course throwing out the soda.

But…but…no dairy, no grains…does that mean (gasp) no pizza?????  Who could live without pizza?  Like, forever?  And I gotta tell you, I’m not that fond of meat…I’m just not…this may sound crazy, but it makes me feel sluggish and too full for too long.  So I just can’t see myself being able to adhere to that kind of diet for very long.

I have given up dairy milk, I started paying attention a few months ago and realized I felt kind of congested every time I drank a glass of milk.  So I thought I’d do a little home based experiment, see how it would affect me to not drink it for a few weeks.  Didn’t drink any for that time, then started drinking it again and felt the congestion again.  So I decided to give it up…I thought it would be more difficult than it was, I’ve always really, really liked milk.  But I honestly haven’t missed it…I use almond milk on my cereal and like it.

And I’ve been eating more natural foods…a lot more fruits and veggies, I’ve even baked my own bread a couple of times.  Just this morning I baked an English muffin bread and it turned out pretty good…kind of chewy with an English muffin like texture (huh, imagine that!  Maybe that’s why they called it English muffin bread…go figure!). I haven’t given up my diet Pepsi yet, but I know I’m going to have to force myself to do it…nothing good for you in any soda, so that’s on my healthy to-do list.

But I just won’t be following the Paleo diet…clean eating is more my style…or even vegetarian.  What about you?  Do you adhere to a special diet?

Did you know this is Meatless Monday?

I hadn’t given it any thought until I was going through my emails and saw the subject on one from Morningstar Farms (hey, wait a minute…do you think they have some kind of interest in making sure people eat vegetarian fare on Mondays?).  As I thought about what I’d eaten over the course of the day I realized I’d had a meatless Monday without even trying.

My protein for the day consisted of peanut butter at breakfast, hummus for lunch and Swiss cheese for dinner…yes, yes, the fat content for the day was high (especially so when you consider I ate avocado with my Swiss cheese this evening), but I sure didn’t miss the meat.  I’ve never been a huge meat-eater anyhow, so it’s not like going without meat is a struggle for me.  I am eating more vegetarian meals though…and fewer fast food meals…can’t hurt, right?

On another note, I’ve still been doing that little push-up/sit-up challenge…nothing too difficult yet.  I’m thinking I’m recovered enough from my cold that I may hop on the exercise bike or treadmill for a bit tomorrow (saw my doctor again today and got a guarded clean bill of health…still have a cough and temp was on the low side…hey, it’s cold here in Indiana, what can I say?).  We’re also starting that fitness challenge (company wide) next Monday…the 10,000 steps a day challenge.  The girls at work are getting excited about it…not sure if they’re more excited about getting fit or the prospect of winning prizes!  It’ll be fun, whatever they’re excited about.

So…do you eat any vegetarian meals?  What’s your favorite?

Long Winter’s Nap

Oh my, I am exhausted…absolutely, utterly exhausted.   For the past 6 weeks I’ve worked 6 days a week, 12-14 hours a day…you’d never guess I work in retail, would you?  But, because I have a great boss, I have the next 3 days off (we’re closed on Christmas), will work a week then take a week’s vacation…ahhh…

Working like this really plays havoc with my fitness routine…while I’m on my feet running around all day, it’s not the same as actually exercising.  And I’ve been going in to work so early in the morning that I haven’t had the energy to get up any earlier to work out before work.  I actually miss my workouts…who would have thought that about me?  Certainly not me!!  Really looking forward to getting out and running again, lifting weights, dancing…and have missed that great feeling I have after a vigorous workout!  I’m also looking forward to getting back to my healthy eating.  I feel so much better when I eat a vegetarian diet, don’t drink diet Pepsi (yes, I’ve gone back to drinking diet Pepsi with the stress of Christmas and working so many hours…could be worse, I guess…could be drinking beer all day!) and get in a good workout every day.

I’ve been giving some serious thought to my New Year’s resolutions (yes, I do make them…don’t always manage to keep them for very long tho)…will do a blog about them soon, once I’ve fully fleshed them out.  And now…ahh…off to bed for that long winter’s nap!
