The long and winding road to fitness, day 133

I had a much-needed and well deserved day off work today.  I slept in…until 6 am, if you can believe that!  Then I just stayed in bed reading until closer to 7 am.  Finally got up and fed the cats, made toast and juice, took that upstairs and read Sunday’s newspaper while eating breakfast.  What a pleasure to be able to take my time getting ready for the day.

I did walk for 20 minutes.  I went to a little park in the neighborhood.  It’s hard to believe that I’ve lived here for ten years and have never stopped  at that park.  I’m definitely going to go back, with camera in hand.  There was a lady playing with two large dogs in a field, nice walking trails, playground equipment, tennis courts, picnic tables, shelter houses.  I had no idea that the park was so nice.  So that was a fun experience.

I also did some lower body strength training and range of motion exercises for my shoulder.  I was surprised that my shoulder wasn’t bothering me more today.  I did a lot of heavy lifting over the past couple of days at work…and the boxes are often too big for me to comfortably wrap my arms around (yes, that’s because I’m short…not much I can do about that).  But my shoulder didn’t feel any worse today than it does any other day.

I eventually went out to the gas station to spend way too much money on gas.  How is it that gas prices can jump over 25 cents in one day?  Oh, I don’t think you want me to get started on my answer to that question.  I also ran into CVS to pick up a couple of things that were on sale…

With coupons added to the sale prices and a $2 ECB, I ended up spending less than $1 for these items.  Don’t you love saving money on things you use anyhow?

I did finally bake the squash I bought a few weeks ago.

I also cleaned and baked the squash seeds…

Makes for a quick, easy, salt-free treat.  Have you ever roasted pumpkin or squash seeds?  What seasonings do you use?  I used a little olive oil and garlic powder for these.  I also like Cajun seasoning.  Okay, now I’m off to eat some squash for my dinner.  Hey, how about that…that’s a vegetable…or is it a fruit?  Well, no matter, at least it’s healthier than fast food, right?

Day 351/365 - fat free Greek yogurt

Another good day with the eating and exercising…I consumed 1550 calories, got in 45 minutes of walking and 6 core exercises, 2 sets each.  Plus, I ran from the front to the back of the store continuously today…we had a call-in in framing, and I was back there most of the day answering questions, helping people with 4-H projects (why do so many people wait until the last minute to do these things?), helping people with their framing questions, directing people to the restroom (please, please, use the restroom…), and trying like crazy to get at least a little of my own work done.

I ate my Greek yogurt, a little granola and a peach all mixed together for my morning snack.  Lunch was the quinoa, black bean salad I made the other day.  I had a V8 fusions drink (pineapple mango with green tea…have you tried these?) with my lunch.  I also ate one of those Fiber One brownies…only 90 calories and good enough to keep me away from the vending machine…honestly, I never even thought about getting anything from the vending machine today…too busy, I guess.

This was my dinner this evening…well, the smoothie, the other two peaches are still sitting on the kitchen counter.  For the smoothie, I used one peach (juicy and delicious), some cantaloupe, half of a frozen banana, half a cup of Greek yogurt and just a little water.  Yum!  And isn’t it just the prettiest peach color?  I also had some Back to Nature flaxseed crackers with a wedge of Laughing Cow cheese…who comes up with this stuff?  It’s so good that I feel like I’m eating a lot more calories than I am…and I’m all for that!  It was a nice, cool, refreshing dinner for this super hot day.

Do you find yourself naturally eating more cold foods when it’s as hot as it is now (I don’t know about where you are, but it’s going to be in the mid 90s here every day this week)?  Is there any particular food that you crave during the hot summer weather?  I like smoothies and watermelon when it’s so miserably hot…and those are some pretty healthy choices, I do believe!!  Stay cool, everyone!

Early morning walking

I got up this morning and decided to get an early morning walk in.  I started out with a jacket because, well, because it’s been chilly every morning…but not this morning.  I shed that jacket not too far into the walk.  Of course, then I had to carry it the rest of the way.  Could have tied it around my shoulders I suppose, but I’ve always thought that looked kind of Ivy League pretentious and goodness knows, that’s not me!

There’s a trail I like to walk that connects my complex with the neighborhood over the hill…

I took this picture last fall…I didn’t even go down to it today because of all the rain we had yesterday…figured it’d be nothing but mud today.

The birds are out in  full force.  I love listening to them in the early morning hours, no one’s around, just me and the wildlife.  I didn’t run across any four-legged critters (or even any two-legged ones) today, just lots of birds singing their little hearts out as the sun began peeping over the horizon.

I’m not saying anything against churches, but this is how I like to spend my Sunday morning…basking in the beauty and glory of creation.
