The long and winding road to fitness, day 93

Carpal tunnel syndrome prevention, range of mo...

Ahh…a day off work, a pleasant day weather-wise.  I didn’t accomplish a lot around the house, but I did sleep in until after 6 this morning…what a treat!  I also saw my new doctor for the first time this afternoon.  I think I’m going to really like her.  I have another appointment in a couple of months for some routine tests.  It’s been a long time since I’ve had a doctor that I’ve liked…so this was a good visit…at least as good as a visit to the doctor can be.  I did go ahead and get my flu shot, decided I didn’t want to get sick again this winter.

I walked today for 30 minutes and did some range of motion exercises and stretching.  Unfortunately I ate too much today.  A little over 2000 calories…darn it!

I’m on vacation, well…sort of.  I’m going in early in the morning because we’re being visited by our zone vice president and the zone HR person.  I mean, you can’t hope to move up in the company and not be around for those kinds of visits, vacation or not.  So my vacation will resume as soon as they leave the building…nice! Keep your fingers crossed that we have a good visit…you also can’t move up in the company if you have bad corporate visits.  So…let’s hope all of our hard work over the past few weeks pays off.

The long and winding road to fitness, day 24

The Doctor, by Sir Luke Fildes (1891)

This was my first day of vacation. I slept in…didn’t roll out of bed until almost 6am…bliss!!  I got up, fed the cats, and then hopped on the exercise bike for 20 minutes.  After a few stretches, I put on a pot of coffee (raspberry chocolate, my new fave) and fixed (that brings back memories of something my step-dad once said, you don’t “fix” breakfast, it wasn’t broken…funny guy) and sat down at the computer for a while.  It was so pleasant to be able to just take my time in the morning, do some writing in my jammies and not have to worry about getting ready for work.

I eventually got dressed, went outside to feed the birds.  Ended up cleaning the bird bath, watering some plants (with this heat wave, they’re just sucking up any moisture you give them), then picking a couple of zucchini, some cucumbers and peppers.  I made a bowl of cucumber and onions, not sure if this is a regional dish or not.  I know my grandmother made it all summer when I was a kid…it just tastes like summer down on the farm to me.

I did a little housework, dusted the entire house, did a load of laundry, cleaned the kitchen,  picked up around the house.  Then I sat on the stability ball to watch Days of Our Lives…what have I missed?  How did it come out about what EJ and Stefano did to Rafe?  Oh well, I’m sure I’ll get caught up this week…  While watching Days, I started doing crunches on the stability ball and that led to me doing an assortment of 10 different core exercises, 2 sets of each…it felt good…whoa, where did that come from?  As soon as I’m done here, I’m going to get on the treadmill for at least 20 minutes.

I also did some online research trying to find a new doctor, one that I actually might like a little.  I’m thankful I have insurance, but of course, you then have to make sure the doctor you’re thinking about is in your plan.  I checked out a few…I knew I wanted a female doctor, not too terribly far from where I live, and one who has some experience in helping people lose weight in a healthy manner.  I get tired of this, “Just eat less, that’s all there is to it.” advice…that’s all there is to it and yet there’s so much more to it.  When I was talking to the doctor’s receptionist and mentioned that I really need some help losing weight, she immediately said, “…doesn’t believe in diet pills, so if that’s what you’re looking for…”  That actually made me feel even better about her, because I really don’t like the thought of diet pills either.  So we’ll see how this goes.  My first appointment with her won’t be until September.  Have you ever noticed how doctors are always booked so far in advance for new patients?

After I got all of that settled, I decided to start looking for some place else to go for my eye exams.  I’ve just gone to the Wal Mart vision center for the last few visits, and didn’t really care for it.  So again, I had to find eye doctors in my insurance plan…back online to do research…finally decided to just go to LensCrafters because it’s location is convenient to me.  I actually got an appointment for tomorrow afternoon…new, fresh contacts here I come.

My eating was decent today…nothing to write home (or a blog) about, but not terrible either.  I had about 1700 calories, not as many fruits and veggies as I’ve been eating, but still not too bad.  It’s way too hot to cook, but tomorrow and Thursday are supposed to be much cooler…yes!!  Right now, I hear thunder in the distance, we just might get some rain…just hope the electricity doesn’t go out…whew…I still need that AC!!

So how did everyone else do today?  Do you put off going to the doctor?  And if you do, is it just because going isn’t a particularly fun thing to do, or is it because you don’t really like your doctor, or is it something else?  I tend to put off going until I really have to and I think it’s because I don’t really care that much for the doctor I’ve been seeing.  I think, because I had a doctor I really liked before moving here, I expect to have a doctor I like, and that could be expecting too much, I don’t know…
