The long and winding road to fitness, day 88

The Sun Comes Up

Wow…88 days…mostly good days, a few really bad days, and some just okay days.  But through it all, I’m still working toward my goal of healthier living, increased fitness, and better overall health.  There have been some days when I thought I’d just give up, go back to my old way of life…but I didn’t…I just kind of struggled through those days in the belief that I could make it to a better tomorrow.  That’s one thing I’ve kind of figured out about life, we will always have to contend with some dark, cloudy days, there will be storms that threaten to beat us down, but if we’re just strong enough to endure, the sun will shine again and we’ll have the opportunity to enjoy the beauty that surrounds us.  We just can’t give up, that’s the thing.  Nobody promised it would be easy, or if they did, they lied!

I went in to work at 5 again this morning…joy, joy.  I managed to get a couple of things marked off my to-do list before we opened.  I had a couple of surprises over the course of the day.  7 am came and one of the managers who was scheduled didn’t show up…I didn’t know if he was going to close, if he’d overslept, or if he’d ended up in a ditch on his way to work.  Probably around 9:30 I was informed that he was going to close, okay…wish I’d known earlier, but okay…Then I got a call on the headset that Stefanie was here for her interview…what?  Interview?  What interview?  I knew I hadn’t scheduled an interview with anyone…so I go to meet her and bring her to the office.  Then I have to apologize to her for not being prepared…not being prepared?  Heck, I couldn’t even find her application…do you think I looked like an idiot?  I finally found her application and proceeded with the interview.  I ended up hiring her.  I really liked her and have high hopes for her.  She’ll come in tomorrow to fill out paperwork (had to wait for her background check to come back) which, by the way, I have already gathered and organized…is organization an innate ability or can it be learned?

So it was another stressful, busy day at work, but my eating was decent.  I didn’t eat breakfast, just had a glass of juice and some vitamins before I left the house.  I had a lite granola bar after I got to work.  Lunch was a small hamburger with all of the veggies and a bag of Sun Chips.  Dinner was a bowl of my vegetable beef soup, a piece of whole wheat bread with olive oil and a glass of ginger peach tea.  I actually ended up with a little over 1200  calories for the day.  Again, that was without really trying to limit my eating…just a really busy day.

I walked for about 15 minutes twice today, did some upper body strength training and range of motion exercises for my shoulder this morning.  Plus a lot of running around at work, as usual.  I guess I’m just going to do the best I can with the exercise  while I’m working so much.  I have to accept that I can’t possibly do everything every day.  Balance is the goal for the rest of the year, my busy time at work.

Are you living a balanced life?  If so, how did you get to that place?  If not, is that something that you think about, work toward?

  1. Great job. Keep it up. Don’t worry about exercise too much. I dropped a TON of weight before I really even thought about exercise.

I constantly tell people slow and steady with the exercise so you don’t burn out on a diet plus exercise.

Good luck achieving your goals and you are doing great.

  2. Balance is something I struggle with on a daily basis. It seems like something unexpected comes up (an adventure!) and I can’t get it back together. I have a cleaning schedule, to spend time on two rooms/day, but I’ve only gotten Monday’s done so far. 😦 Maybe next week I’ll get it all together. lol You’re right. We can’t ever give up, we have to get up each new day and do our best. I bought lots of fruit yesterday, plums, apples, clementines, bananas & lots of veggies, too; today was a really good day calorie-wise, and I got 30 mins. of cardio in, too. I wanted to do more, but I’ve been dealing with a hip/hamstring spasm; when it starts complaining, I try stretching it, and eventually just have to stop. It’s always something, it seems. Oh, well. I was able to get out of bed this morning. A lot of people can’t do that. Have a great day, Patti!

    • oh my gosh, you’re so right about being thankful that we can get out of bed every morning, so many people would give just about everything to be able to do just that. Sounds like you’ve got a good supply of fresh fruit and veggies on hand…I’m heading to the store tomorrow and planning to pick up a few things to take to work so I can get in a few more fruits and veggies over the course of my workday. I so admire you for working out despite the pain you have…the stretching is good, I’ve been doing a lot of that to relieve the aches and pains of my 12 hour work days. Ahh…the housecleaning will keep…ha! It’ll always be right there waiting for you to do it, it’s not going anywhere…I’m still waiting for those little housecleaning fairies to make a pit stop at my house.
